Discount Intermediate Oboe Reed

Summary:

  • First Chair Intermediate Oboe Reeds are handmade from scratch and hand finished with care. They are part of my Slimline collection.  This collection differs from my original design only in that there is less definition in the heart. It is not inferior, it is just different. By reducing definition, I can create a reed with optimum response for the intermediate without dropping pitch.
  • All of their functional goals (tone, pitch and response) are the same as our higher end reeds. They exceed all quality standards in their category.
  • Use light application of Vaseline to moisturize cork in the event that player does not have some handy.
  • Covid sanitized.  Players are still advised to sanitize reeds on arrival.
  • Reeds are guaranteed against cracks and leaks or other defects with a refund or replace remedy.

Experience Level:

  • They are the best budget oboe reeds for intermediate players with 12-36 months experience.  Their embouchures have developed to the point that they are able to manage a reed with more resistance and sound better than with a student model.  Recreational players whose music making is one of many extracurricular pursuits find this an especially attractive option.

Nuts And Bolts For Instructor Reference

  • Handmade from scratch and hand finished just like our Magic Reed Intermediate Model.
  • I use excellent medium strength cane from my inventory that is precision processed for optimum results. I select my favorite shape from my collection that balances tone and pitch.(Mack ++, Mack-Pfeiffer or Samson +).
  • Mounted on an unmarked professional Chiarugi # 2+ - 47 mm staple with a natural cork and brass core.  The only difference is the branding- honest! They have a size and shape that promotes a somewhat smaller aperture and has a similar response to the premium model.
  • Tie length is 72 1/2-73 mm at my discretion.
  • This is not a whimpy, tissue thin reed and will last longer than most and will give the player something to blow against so proper embouchure can be learned.
  • Reeds are finished with a long scrape, and with a heart that is @.40 mm in thickness along the sides of the spine.  It has less definition between back to heart relative to higher end models.
  • Finished length target is 70mm. It is never longer, and sometimes 69.5 to address pitch issues.
  • In some cases, I may use a profiler in the middle third of the processto reduce the thickness of the reed before finishing.
  • Finishing Touches: Each oboe reed is finished at or above intermediate standards.  Many customer find them very close to most pro models.
  • No two reeds are ever exactly the same.  No two customers are either. While I do not accept returns for reeds that might not be an exact fit to your own personal playing style, you can use the comment section on our checkout page to offer suggestions that will help me to make better match in subsequent orders.
  • Tested in two rooms with and without carpet on a Loree 125 oboe. Reed prep instructions are included.  I need to like every reed I sell.  If I don't, it gets smashed and I reuse the staple. When I test these reeds, I try to replicate the embouchure of the player I expect to purchase it, not my own.
