Pre-Professional Oboe Reed

Summary:

  • First Chair Pre-Professional Oboe Reeds are handmade from scratch and hand finished with care. They are part of our Slimline Collection. All of their functional goals (tone, pitch and response) are addressed for a warmer, rounder tone quality than the budget intermediate model. They are made with certain efficiencies to put their price within the reach of more players. All reeds are made with an American long scrape and exceed all quality standards in their category.

Experience Level:

  • They are designed for high school, conservatory, secondary majors and other advanced recreational players enjoy the benefits of this wonderful oboe reed. Typically players have more than 3 years experience, are progressing are able to manage a reed with somewhat more resistance than the intermediate model.

Construction/Scrape:

  • The construction and hand finish are the same as our Magic Reed Intermediate Model, but with a somewhat more nuanced  hand-finish that improves tone quality.
  • They are handmade from scratch using excellent medium strength cane from my inventory that precision processed for optimum results.  We try to select cooperative cane that does not require a lot of wrangling.
  • Medium range shape which is either a Mack ++, Mack-Pfeiffer or Samson +.
  • Mounted on an unmarked professional Chiarugi # 2+ - 47 mm staple with a natural cork and brass core.  The only difference is the branding- honest! They have a size and shape that promotes a somewhat smaller aperture and has a similar response to the premium model.  Tie length is 72 1/2-73 mm at my discretion.  The cane has a couple of degrees offset from the median to create extra torque in the tie- the same as the pro models.
  • Reeds are finished with a defined heart and tip.  The heart is  @.40 mm in thickness along the sides of the spine. The rest is up to what is required by the individual characteristics of the cane in pursuit of the four pillars described above.  Finished length target is 70mm. It is never longer, and sometimes 69.5 to address pitch issues.
  • The process efficiencies that bring the price down take place after the blank is made and a light hand profile to expose the bark is applied. The heavier profile needed to prepare for final hand finishing may be done by hand or machine. The medium strength cane we use is hard enough to benefit from a profiler, when softer cane never will.  This process improves overall yield by reducing cosmetic errors, allowing for a more affordable price point. We also hand finish in one cycle. When a reed requires more than one hand finishing cycle, we will store it and reassess at a later time.

Finishing Touches:

  • Each oboe reed is finished above industry standards.  Many customer find them very close to most pro models.
  • No two reeds are ever exactly the same.  No two customers are either. While I do not accept returns for reeds that might not be an exact fit to your own personal playing style, you can use the comment section on our checkout page to offer suggestions that will help me to make better match in subsequent orders.
  • Tested in two rooms with and without carpet on a Loree 125 oboe. Reed prep instructions are included.  I need to like every reed I sell.  If I don't, it gets smashed and I reuse the staple. When I test these reeds, I try to replicate the embouchure of the player I expect to purchase it, not my own.
  • Light application of Vaseline to moisturize cork in the event that player does not have some handy.
  • Covid sanitized.  Players are still advised to sanitize reeds on arrival.
  • Reeds are guaranteed against cracks and leaks or other defects with a refund or replace remedy.
